You have the whole 3 bedroom house to yourself during your stay. It is a 1920s farmhouse, typical of the Huon area. It retains much of its original charm, but has also had a renovation in 2021 that included a new kitchen, new bathroom, new laundry and fresh internal paint. The result is a clean, cosy but historical house that we think is a joy to spend time in. In addition to the 3 large bedrooms accommodation, there is a spacious, private sunroom off the main bedroom.
Photos of each bedroom can be found further below.
The new kitchen has ample bench-space, a medium sized fridge/freezer, an under-bench oven and electric stovetop, coffee machine, microwave, all the cutlery and crockery you will need, and some basics (pasta, sugar etc) you are most welcome to use.
We have purposely not included a dishwasher, but there is a new, large double sink below a window with a beautiful farm and mountain view to enjoy while you do the dishes!
The newly renovated bathroom is clean and warm. The adjoining laundry has a front-loading washing machine and dryer, and there is a large outdoor clothes line.
With a large window overlooking farmland, a woodburner fireplace, TV and comfortable seating, the lounge provides a great place to relax at the end of the day.
The farmhouse is surrounded by a large yard of about an acre. These gardens are perfect for enjoying being outside, contain a number of sitting areas, a firewood shed and fruit trees.
Beyond the house yard, there are 24 surrounding acres, mostly pasture with some tree belts. The property is divided into 5 large paddocks, one of which at any one time will contain calves from the Glen Huon Dairy Co. These friendly young cows are a pleasure to watch and meet at the fenceline, but we ask that you avoid the paddock they are using during your stay. You will always have a pathway (property maps provided at the house) to walk a couple of hundred metres down to the river.
A real feature of Fresh Ayre Farm is direct access to 350 metres of frontage to one of Tasmania's most beautiful, and 4th longest, rivers - the Huon. In warmer weather, the shallow, smooth-stone base on the farm side provides a perfect place to swim, float, sit or kayak. In cooler weather, it is still a beautiful, peaceful place to just 'be'. At any time of year, it is a good place to cast a line (licence required in Tasmanian inland waters) for the famous Brown Trout that can be caught from the banks of the farm.
You are guaranteed of seeing a range of birds around the farmhouse, including superb fairy wrens, cockatoos, green rosellas and pink robins.
At night, wallabies often enter the house-yard. Be ready with a torch if you hear them. There are active wombat burrows down near the river, and we have seen platypus on the river.
Clear sky nights at Fresh Ayre Farm provide a stunning view of the Milky Way. Stargazing is one of our favourite activities at the farm.
About 1km from the property is Judbury's Calvert Park which has a great children's playground, public toilets, jetty access to the Huon River, and hosts the thriving, monthly Judbury Market. In Ranelagh, between Judbury and Huonville, you will find the Summer Kitchen Organic Bakery, with its wood-fired sourdough bread and family vegetarian pies.
Huonville is a vibrant service town 12km from Fresh Ayre Farm. You will find supermarkets, hardware stores, bakeries, and much more, including some great cafes and restaurants. Some of our absolute favourites include DS Cafe, Jin's Kitchen (for the best Korean) and Alternative Japanese.
The Huon Jet, the only white water jet boat ride in Australia, is a fun way to see more of the Huon River and departs from the Boat Shed Cafe on Huonville's Esplanade.
Heading south from Huonville, after 5 mins you will reach Franklin, a beautiful riverside village. Try Cinnamon and Cherry, you won't be disappointed. The Wooden Boat Centre (http://www.woodenboatcentre.com/) on the Franklin waterfront should not be missed. A little further south gets you to the town of Geeveston (the real-life Rosehaven). See the Forest and Heritage Centre in the centre, the resident platypus in the river, before heading up to the Tahune Airwalk (29km from Geeveston) to see a wilder side to the Huon River before it reaches Fresh Ayre Farm.
The Hartz Mountains National Park is a short distance south (access via Geeveston), and has some of the most incredible and accessible alpine hiking you will find. One of our favourite shorter walks is the trail to Lake Osbourne.

Cygnet is a popular town 30mins drive (30km) from Fresh Ayre Farm, south-east of Huonville. Their market is definitely worth catching on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month (https://cygnetmarket.com.au/), but it's a pleasure to visit at any time.
Fresh Ayre Farm is perfectly located for day excursions into the Far South ... beyond Geeveston you will find the hidden-away perfection of Southport and the charming village of Dover. Keep heading south to reach the most southern point in Australia that can be reached by road - Cockle Creek. Walk to the start of the South-west Track, or take a beautiful beach stroll around several headlands to Fishers Point, taking in some of the most pristine coastline in the state.
We acknowledge the Tasmanian Aboriginal people and their enduring custodianship of lutruwita (Tasmania), and recognise this farmland as the traditional lands of the melukerdee people of the Huon River. We honour the uninterrupted care, protection and belonging to these islands and its skies and waterways, before the invasion and colonisation of European settlement.
As part of a tourism industry that welcomes visitors to these lands, we acknowledge our responsibility to represent to our visitors Tasmania’s deep and complex history, fully, respectfully and truthfully. We acknowledge the Aboriginal people who continue to care for this country today. We pay our respects to their elders, past and present. We honour their stories, songs, art, and culture, and their aspirations for the future of their people and these lands.
